UPLAND, Ind. – Ryan Robinson continued his torrid junior season with one of his finest games, netting 30 points to surpass 1,000 for his career but Grace Christian snuck past the Trojans for a 73-71 decision on the 22nd-Annual Ivanhoes Silent Night.
Jake Heggeland also made history, breaking the silence on a free throw for the second-straight year. Heggeland joined Evan Crowe (2015, 2016), Casey Coons (2009-2012) and Andrew Davies (1997, 1998) as the four players to score the 10th point in more than one Silent Night for the Trojans.
The Heggeland free throw sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy and ignited a 12-0 Taylor rally that pushed the Purple and Gold to a 19-14 edge.
Taylor took a 36-34 lead to the half and quickly opened an eight-point gap at 45-37 just over three minutes into the second stanza. TU led by eight on two more occasions over the ensuing minutes, but Grace Christian (11-5) battled back to even with 6:43 remaining and opened a six-point lead with 2:13 to play.
A triple from Jason Hubbard sliced the deficit in half and deuce from Heggeland narrowed the margin to one in the closing minute, but Taylor came away empty on its final two possessions and suffered its first loss on Silent Night in the tradition's 22-year history.
Robinson was nearly a one-man wrecking crew for TU, feeding off the crowd to hit eight-of-14 three-point tries and closing with 30 points and four rebounds in over 36 minutes of work. The point guard became the 43rd player in Taylor history to reach 1,000-career points, the fourth on the active roster and the third to do so this season.
The Trojans could not provide enough support to Robinson's heroics, as the rest of the squad was just five-of-21 from deep and 17-of-46 from the field while accounting for only 41 points.
Hubbard chipped in 14 points, with Mason Degenkolb adding 11 points, six assists and four rebounds. Heggeland closed with six points, eight boards and two blocks.
Taylor (4-8, 2-2 CL) will jump back into action on Saturday night, when it hosts Goshen (1-10, 0-4 CL) in a 7:00 pm tip on Paul Patterson Court.
