Lamping, Trojans Win Pilot Invitational
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The 21st-ranked Taylor men's golf team claimed its fourth tournament title of the season, blitzing the field at the Pilot Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Mitch Lamping notched the first tournament title of his career after firing a final round 72 (E) to finish with a two-day total of 145 (73-72). Lamping edged teammate Alec Dutkowski by a shot after Dutkowski followed his opening round 73 with another round of 73 for a two-round total of 146 to finish in a tie for second.
Sophomore Trey Turner added a round of 74 to finish in fourth place with a two-day total of 148. Taylor also counted a score of 77 from Stefan Fahlen while junior Ian Rinken added a 78.
Taylor held a six shot lead after an opening round score of 299 and the Trojans extended their lead in round two, carding the lowest team score of the day with a 296. Taylor's two-round total of 595 was 13 shots better than second place Holy Cross and 20 shots clear of Grace in third place.
The victory was Taylor's fourth of the 2015-16 season and improved TU's overall head-to-head record for the season to 105-10. The Trojans will have their final tune-up prior to the Crossroads League Championships next weekend at the Huntington Invitational at Trophy Club Golf Course in Lebanon, Indiana.
