Taylor Falls in Narrow 4-3 Decision
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Taylor claimed the doubles point and earned victories at two of the top three singles flights but could not hold off Saint Francis in a 4-3 Crossroads League loss Saturday at the Swinney Tennis Center.
The Trojans (4-10, 1-6 CL) controlled doubles play, taking two of three flights to grab the early lead. Graham Beukelman and Tyler Lane defeated Jorge Cebria and Juan Andres Wilches 6-4 at No. 1 for the pair's fifth doubles win of the season, and Ian Helfert and Andrew Roth topped Enzo Bozonnet and Alvaro Adrio 7-5 at No. 3, picking up their second victory as a doubles team. Hugo Gonzalez Cabanas and Gerard Cuixart gave the Cougars a win at No. 2, handling Joseph Harper and Matthew Williams 6-2.
Lane continued his strong season at No. 1 singles, defeating Wilches 7-5, 6-3 for his team-leading 10th singles victory of the year. Beukelman provided the Trojans' other singles point with a gritty three-set win over Gonzalez Cabanas at No. 3, taking the first set 6-1 before dropping the second 1-6 and rallying for a 6-4 win in the third to improve to 9-8 in singles.
Saint Francis swept the remaining four flights to secure the match. Cebria defeated Harper 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, and Cuixart did the same to Helfert at No. 4. Adrio defeated Josh Dawson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, and Grant Mishler topped Josh Clegg 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6 flight.
Taylor travels to No. 10 Huntington on Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. first serve.
