NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recently announced its 2019 All-Academic team and individual awards. The Taylor University men's cross country program received both team and individual academic honors.
In order to receive the USTFCCCA All-Academic team award, the squad must hold a grade-point average of 3.0 or better during the fall semester. Posting a 3.59 team GPA, Taylor received the honor and ranked second out of 44 NAIA men's cross country teams that qualified, trailing only Oregon Institute of Technology (3.67).
The USTFCCCA also handed out individual All-Academic awards to anyone who competed in the 2019 NAIA Cross Country National Championships and compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better.
TU nabbed five individual awards, as Daniel Gerber, Alex Helmuth, Josh Roth, Luke Rovenstine and Derek Van Prooyen were all named USTFCCCA All-Academic recipients.
The men's and women's cross country teams combined received 11 honors between the two programs.
In addition to ranking second in the NAIA in team GPA and honoring five student-athletes with USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, Taylor also finished runner-up at the NAIA National Championships for its best-ever finish at nationals.
