Trojans, Jung Victorious at Purgatory Intercollegiate
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – The 17th-ranked Taylor women's golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a victory at the Purgatory Intercollegiate on Friday.
Freshman Nicole Jung collected her third collegiate tournament title in just her sixth start while the Trojans added their third team title of the season and improved their overall head-to-head record to 49-3-1 this season.
The Trojans built a slim lead over #RV Cardinal Stritch during the opening 18 holes on Thursday as sophomore Maddie Thomas paced the TU attack with a 4-over par 76 on the 5,850-yard, par 72 layout of Purgatory Golf Club. Fellow sophomore Annie Stimmel added a 78 in the opening round while Jung tallied a 79 and junior Elizabeth Jackson carded an 80. Taylor's team score of 313 was two shots clear of Cardinal Stritch and 12 shots ahead of Indiana Wesleyan heading into the final round.
Jung made her charge in the second round, firing the best round of the day at 75 to lead the Trojans. Fellow freshman Taylor French added a 77 for TU in round two while Stimmel carded a 79 and Thomas tallied an 80. The Trojans posted a team score of 311 in the final round to hold off a charge from Cardinal Stritch and collect a three shot victory with a two-round total of 624 (313-311).
Cardinal Stritch finished second at 627 (315-312) followed by Olivet Nazarene at 652 (331-321), Indiana Wesleyan at 657 (325-332), and the Taylor B team at 701 (350-351).
Joining Jung on the All-Tournament team was Thomas who finished in a tie for third at 156 (76-80) and Stimmel who finished in a tie for fifth place at 157 (78-79). Senior Grace Elenbaas, who competed for the Taylor B team, added a top ten finish with a tie for ninth place at 160 (75-80).
Other scores for the Taylor B team included Lauren Murphy at 178 (89-89), Rachel Coers at 178 (93-85), Alexis Harris at 185 (93-92), and Mariah Williams at 220 (107-113).
Taylor will travel to Old Hickory Country Club in Nashville, Tennessee to face a loaded field in the Cumberland University Phoenix Invitational on Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27.
