Jung, Thomas Leads Trojans to Third Place Finish
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Nicole Jung finished tied for second and Maddie Thomas tied for eighth as the 17th-ranked Taylor women's golf team claimed a third place finish among a loaded field at the Phoenix Invitational.
Fresh off a victory last week at the Purgatory Intercollegiate, Jung continued her brilliant play with a tie for second place. Jung posted a two-day total of 152 (77-75) to finish four shots behind William Carey's Aleesha Smith while collecting her sixth top-5 finish in just her seventh collegiate event.
Thomas was nearly as impressive as the sophomore carded a two-day total of 155 (78-77) to move into a tie for eighth place. Last season's Crossroads League Newcomer of the Year, Thomas has now finished inside the top-10 in six of seven events this season.
The Trojans also counted a score of 84 from junior Elizabeth Jackson and an 85 from freshman Taylor French while sophomore Annie Stimmel was the TU drop score in the final round with an 86.
Taylor's team score of 321 was only two shots off the best team score of the day posted by No. 9 William Carey and No. 21 Cumberland and tied No. 2 Dalton State's score for the final round.
Second-ranked Dalton State claimed the team title with a two-day total of 621 (300-321) followed by No. 9 William Carey at 628 (309-319). The Trojans were third at 643 (322-321) followed by No. 21 Cumberland at 645 (326-319), No. 19 Faulkner at 650 (327-323), No. 24 Brenau at 652 (322-330), Trevecca Nazarene at 662 (335-327), and No. 25 Bethel at 678 (328-350).
The Trojans will return to action on April 6-7 at the Saint Francis Invitational.
