Trojans Slip to Third in Nashville
NASHVILLE – The Taylor women's golf team failed to hold on to its lead during the final round of the Phoenix Invitational as the Trojans slipped to third place on Tuesday.
The 14th-ranked Trojans entered the day with a 10-shot lead over No. 3 William Carey but the Trojans struggled to navigate the 5,850-yard, par-72 layout of Old Hickory Country Club, stumbling to a team score of 325 and dropping to third place in the final standings.
The Trojans managed two scores in the 70's during the final round with sophomores Nicole Jung and Taylor French carding rounds of 77 and 79, respectively to pace Taylor. Junior Annie Stimmel added an 83 while junior Maddie Thomas posted an 86 and senior Elizabeth Jackson fired a 91 during Tuesday's final round.
Taylor carded a team score of 325 to finish the two-day event with a team tally of 633 (308-325) and finish six shots behind No. 3 William Carey (318-309) and one shot behind No. 23 Cumberland (TN) (321-311).
The Trojans did finish ahead of No. 24 Freed-Hardeman (330-323) as well as Crossroads League foes Saint Francis (331-335) and Bethel (338-330).
French earned a spot on the all-tournament team finishing in a three-way tie for second place at 151 (72-79) as the top TU finisher. Jung added a seventh place finish (77-77) while Stimmel finished just outside the top-10, finishing tied for 13th place at 161 (78-83).
The Trojans will enjoy a short break before returning to action on April 12-13 at the Pilot Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana.
