Trojans Win as Jung Collects 16th Career Title
NOBLESVILLE, IN. – The most decorated golfer in Taylor history added another chapter to her legacy on Saturday as fifth-year senior Nicole Jung captured her 16th career tournament title to lead the 19th-ranked Trojans to victory.
Jung traversed the challenging 5,850-yard, par-72 layout of Purgatory Golf Club in just 76 shots during the final round that featured strong winds and cold temperatures. Jung entered Saturday's final round trailing teammate Ellie Karst by two shots and with the second-best score of the day during round two Jung moved to the top of the leaderboard with a two-day total of 155 (79-76).
The Santa Cruz, Bolivia native edged teammate Sabrina Langerak by three shots for the title while leading the Trojans to the team title as well. The victory is Jung's third of the season and continues an incredible run in which Jung has won or finished runner-up in seven of her eight starts this season. The lone exception was a tie for fourth place.
Jung's play was the catalyst for a strong performance for the 19th-ranked Trojans who managed to hold off rallies from a pair of ranked foes in No. 18 Campbellsville and No. 25 Bethel.
Taylor entered the final round with nine shot advantage over Campbellsville and a 12-shot advantage over Bethel but some early errors by TU and strong starts from the Tigers and Pilots trimmed the Taylor advantage to as little as three during the midway point of the round. The Trojans rallied down the stretch and managed to hold off Campbellsville for a six-shot win while maintaining the advantage over Bethel.
Taylor tallied a team score of 319 during the final round to finish with a two-round total of 641 (322-319). Campbellsville managed a 315 in the final round to finish with a two-round total of 647 (331-316) followed by Bethel at 656 (334-322).
Langerak collected her second career runner-up finish with a two-day total of 158 (81-77) while fellow freshman Ellie Karst managed a seventh-place finish at 161 (77-84). Sophomore Elizabeth Kemper rallied after a rough start to post a final round 82 to finish tied for 13th place (85-82) while junior Kailey Behrens finished at 171 (85-86) and freshman Alyssa Schmidt finished at 174 (86-88).
The victory is Taylor's fifth of the season and marks the fourth straight victory for Taylor at the Purgatory Intercollegiate. The Trojans return to action on April 11-12 when TU travels to Dalton, Georgia for the Roadrunner Classic at Nob North Golf Club.
