Taylor Falls to Greenville in Spring Season Opener
INDIANAPOLIS – The Taylor University women's tennis team raised the curtain on the spring portion of its schedule with Friday's neutral-site match against Greenville University, hosted at Indianapolis Racquet Club East. The Trojans fell by a final score of 5-2 and dropped to 3-3 overall on the year.
After losing the best-of-three doubles point, Taylor evened the match at 1-1 when Evy Danemayer posted the first individual result of the day at No. 4 Singles. The freshman opened with a 6-3 victory in Set 1 before GU's Lily Gregory forced a tiebreak by taking the second stanza, 6-2. Danemayer claimed the tiebreak set to improve her individual record to 3-3, with three wins in her last four appearances in dual matches.
At No. 5 Singles, Anna Stone registered the second point for the Trojans after defeating GU's Jaidyn Goode, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0, with solid bounce-back performance in the tiebreaker. It was also Stone's third singles victory this season in dual matches.
The Panthers clinched the match with a 4-1 advantage after edging out the Trojans at No. 2, No. 6 and No. 3 Singles.
Maddy Fuqua fell just short in a tough battle at the No. 1 Singles match. She won the opening set, 6-3, before falling in a 7-6 Set 2 tiebreaker to GU's Irlanda Oliver, who held on for the match tiebreak.
In addition, Ellie Schaufelberger claimed a 6-4 victory in Set 1 before falling in a tightly contested matchup at No. 3 Singles.
Taylor's mid-year additions Gracie Frazier and Delaney Dahl earned a 6-2 victory at No. 3 Doubles in their Trojan debut. Frazier also competed at No. 6 Singles.
The Trojans return to action on Friday-Saturday, March 6-7, with road matches at Campbellsville and Indiana Southeast. Taylor's spring home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10 at 3 p.m. against Indiana East.
