Late Set Slides See Trojans Drop Match Against Campbellsville
MARION, Ind. – All three sets slipped away from the Trojans late against Campbellsville (KY) (12-8) in a rematch of last year's NAIA Opening Round, in which TU defeated the Tigers 3-1.
Gracie Conway led the way with nine kills in the match while adding a block and a dig. Grace Ieremia was efficient in the middle, providing eight kills on 17 swings. The junior added five digs and two blocks in another terrific match against Campbellsville. Lindsay Springer added 32 assists and was one dig away from another double-double, while Reagan Kleiman led the team with four blocks.
Taylor was behind by five early in the opener before clawing back to tie and eventually take the lead 21-20. A timeout by the Tigers sparked a 5-0 run to take the first set 25-21.
The second set followed a similar pattern as TU trailed by five before storming back during an 8-3 run to tie the match at 18. The Tigers took the next three points before the Trojans grabbed two straight points to trail 21-20. Campbellsville finished strong once again to take the set 25-21.
TU erased another five-point deficit, and the teams traded points until the set was deadlocked at 23. Two points from the Tigers closed the book on the match that was closer than the final score.
Taylor (11-13, 2-9) will look to regroup and come back strong on Saturday, October 7, with two more matches in the IWU Tri-match event. TU will match up with No. 13 Columbia (17-4) at 10:00 am before turning around and finishing off the day with Saint Francis (Ill.) (7-10) at noon.
