Goshen Ends TU's 20-Game Win Streak at Winterholter
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor received eight free passes from the Goshen hurlers under the lights at Winterholter Field on Friday evening but could not cash them in, stranding 11 runners on the bases in a 4-3 setback that marked TU's seventh one-run loss of the season.
The heart of Taylor's red-hot lineup came up empty against the Maple Leafs (19-21, 10-11 CL), as the Trojans were zero-of-19 from the two-through six spots in the order with key hits eluding TU throughout the contest.
Taylor left runners in scoring position in five of the first seven innings, before going down in order in the final two frames against the Crossroads League's leading save artist. TU's best chances came in the sixth and seventh innings but the Trojans left runners on second and third in the sixth and left the bases loaded in the seventh.
Wyatt Whitman accounted for all three TU runs, as the leadoff man singled in two in the second for an early 2-0 lead and knocked in the go-ahead tally in the fourth for a 3-2 lead.
Goshen countered each time, plating two unearned runs off a rare Taylor fielding blunder in the third to knot the score at 2-2, before a two-run homer in the fifth capped the scoring at 4-3.
Whitman ended the night with three of TU's six hits and all three runs batted in, while Andrew Kennedy scored twice and Brett Lawson went two-of-three with a run scored.
Rob Fox and Mitch Ubelhor were dominant over the final five innings for TU out of the pen, fanning nine Goshen batters and allowing only two hits to keep the deficit at just the single run.
The loss dropped TU to 32-11 on the season and 12-6 in league play with seven of the losses coming by one run and five of the six Crossroads League defeats coming by a single tally.
Taylor and Goshen will meet again on Saturday, with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm.
