MISHAWAKA, Ind. – A Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Bethel fell the way of Taylor, as the visitors grabbed a 3-2 win in game one and a 10-5 triumph to complete the season sweep.
Clay Riggins (7-1) opened the day on the bump for TU (31-13, 11-9 CL), offering 4.2 innings with five strikeouts in game one. The senior picked up his seventh win of the season and his second-consecutive victory over Bethel (9-25, 5-16 CL).
The fourth frame saw the first impact on the scoreboard for either team, as Taylor notched a one-run lead by taking advantage of a leadoff walk.
TU continued to rally in the fifth, plating two more for a 3-0 edge. Offensively, Taylor capitalized on its opportunities scoring three runs on three hits.
Two runs from the Pilots proved to be not enough, as Mitch Ubelhor completed the final five outs for his team-leading seventh save.
In game two, the Trojans once again was the first team to score, as they never trailed on the day. Nick Rusche placed a double in the third inning to score a pair for a 2-0 Taylor lead.
Four more doubles came from TU in the fourth and fifth innings. The squad scored two more runs in each inning, increasing its advantage to 6-1.
Six different Trojans nabbed a double in game two, while seven posted an extra-base hit, as Brian Fields knocked a homer for his third of the year.
Notching the win and starting on the mound, Cy Stanley (5-0) maintained solid control with six strikeouts through five innings. The freshman refused to allow an earned run, helping lower his season earned-run average to 1.20.
The Purple and Gold will return to Winterholter Field in its next contest, facing Indiana Wesleyan (18-25, 12-9 CL) on Friday at 6:00 pm.
