UPLAND, Ind. – A rescheduled doubleheader on Monday ended with a split between Taylor and Indiana Wesleyan. Brian Fields played the hero in game one with a walkoff single for a 6-5 victory, before the team tripped up with a 14-1 game two defeat.
The junior designated hitter, Fields, logged his first big hit in the third inning. TU (32-15, 12-11 CL) found itself behind Indiana Wesleyan (20-26, 14-10 CL) by a 4-1 margin, as the righty slugger came to the plate with two baserunners. Fields proceeded to blast a three-run home run to even the game at four apiece.
The Lewis Center, Ohio native homered for the fourth time this season, helping Taylor to a 4-0 record in those games.
Once again the Trojans found themselves in a deficit, as they entered the final inning of game one. Wyatt Whitman began the frame with a single to boost Taylor's hopes. A bunt from Josh Lane was meant to move the runner over but a Wildcat error kept both Trojans safe on second and third. Coming in clutch, Fields tallied his fourth and fifth RBI with a single to right field to secure a 6-5 TU victory.
Luke Carlson and Mitch Ubelhor paired up for great innings of relief. Carlson offered 3.1 innings with two strikeouts, while allowing just one run. Coming in to close out the seventh, Ubelhor posted two quick outs to pick up the win.
Game two was all about power hitting for Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats knocked 11 extra-base hits in the contest, including seven long balls. The offensive outpouring led to the Trojans' first mercy rule loss of the year.
Offensively, Whitman and Nick Rusche each smacked four hits through the two games on the afternoon. The freshman second baseman Rusche leads the team on the season with a .322 batting average.
Taylor will return to Winterholter Field for its next contest on Tuesday at 4:00 pm against Mount Vernon Nazarene (32-15, 15-8 CL).
