Taylor Pulls Away in the Second Half for Comfortable CL Victory Over Goshen
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor used an electric offensive display in the second half to blow past Goshen on Saturday as the junior duo of Pete Combs and Izaiah Day combined for forty points.
Day scored 19 and Combs added 21 to carry the offense in an 89-70 victory over the Maple Leafs in Crossroads League action. Taylor has now scored 85 or more in seven of 11 contests this season and has won its past four games.
The Trojans shot under 20 percent from beyond the arc in the opening half and had just nine points after seven minutes of play and trailed 10-9.
Levin Smith converted one of two first-half triples to give TU the lead, which it held for the rest of the afternoon. The lead continued to grow but stayed in single digits for the rest of the half.
Taylor's offense exploded after halftime, scoring 16 points in the first four and a half minutes, punctuate by four dunks, three from Combs leading to a comfortable 57-40 lead.
TU continued to control the contest as Anthony McGhee converted a pair of three pointers and Zahree Harrison flashed his speed to get by the defense and set up the offense. The pair of guards finished the day with 12 points apiece.
The only thing that stopped the Trojans in the second half was turnovers, handing it over 17 times in the game. Despite the large number the defense forced 18 turnovers led by four steals from Nathan Baker, who also tied the game-high with seven rebounds. Smith also grabbed seven boards, as the team had 45, 14 more than the visitors.
The win this afternoon capped an impressive 3-0 week for Taylor, which included an upset of No. 11 Bethel, with the Trojans currently tied for second in the Crossroads League standings.
Taylor (8-3, 3-1 CL) has over a week before playing Milligan in the Christmas at the Wooden event at the Wooden Family Fieldhouse in Xenia, Ohio on Tuesday December 16, with tip scheduled for 2:45 pm.
