Glass Elected to Grant County Hall of Fame
Former Taylor University athletic director and head cross country and track & field coach George Glass has been elected to the Grant County Sports Hall of Fame. Glass will be one of nine new members inducted to the hall on April 10, 2011 at the Star Financial Bank YMCA in Marion, Ind.
Glass, Taylor's head men's cross country and track coach from 1960-85, produced 32 conference championship teams, won 32 coach of the year awards, and coached two individuals to NAIA National Championship titles. From 1966-79 Glass's teams won 14 consecutive track and field championships. He also spearheaded seven straight conference cross country titles from 1966-72.
The Taylor cross country program rose to NAIA prominence under Glass, earning Top 10 honors at the NAIA National Championships five different times.
Inducted into the Taylor Hall of Fame in 1977, Glass served as a professor in the physical education department and as director of athletics for 27 years. In addition to being selected as a "Distinguished Professor", the Taylor University Alumni Association acknowledged his service in 1998 with its highest level of recognition, the "Legion of Honor."
In 1984 the United States Olympic Committee asked Glass to serve as one of the judges at the Olympiad held in Los Angeles, Calif. During the summer of 1996 he served as chief official for the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga.
The track and field facility on Taylor's campus is named the George C. Glass Track & Field Complex in his honor.
Glass joins former Taylor football coach Jim Law and former men's basketball coach Don Odle in the Grant County Sports Hall of Fame. Current Taylor men's basketball coach Paul Patterson was also inducted into the hall last spring.
Still an active member of the Taylor community, Glass serves on the board of the Taylor Athletics Hall of Fame.
