UPLAND, Ind. - The Taylor women's basketball team did not make a field goal in the first 10:06 of the second half, in what proved to be the decisive stretch in a 56-42 home loss on Wednesday to No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan.
Both teams entered play riding hot streaks on the defensive side of the ball, with the top-rated defense of the Wildcats holding teams to 44.8 points per game over their last six and TU limiting opponents to a 35.4-percent clip from the field in its last five outings.
The two defenses lived up to the billing throughout Wednesday's contest, especially from the perimeter, where Taylor limited IWU to 27.3 percent from beyond the arc, while managing only two made three-pointers of its own in 21 attempts.
Taylor ended the contest shooting just 26.3 percent from the field and 9.5 percent from deep, while committing 19 turnovers. The visitors also struggled to control the ball with 18 miscues of their own.
The game started with the Trojans connecting on their first two attempts from the floor for a quick, 4-0, lead before hitting only two of their next 20 attempts. The cold spell allowed Indiana Wesleyan to take control, as the Wildcats used separate spurts of 8-0 and 10-0 to build a 20-11 edge on their way to a 29-19 lead at the half.
The IWU defense then put the game away in the first 10 minutes of the second half, forcing Taylor into eight turnovers and no baskets in 12 attempts during that pivotal stretch.
The second extended drought of the evening for TU allowed Indiana Wesleyan to push its lead out to a 40-22 margin, before Ashley Fouch connected on Taylor's first hoop of the half with 9:54 left in the game.
Taylor would outscore the Wildcats by a 20-16 margin over the game's final 10 minutes but it would be too late, as IWU rolled to the 56-42 win.
Indiana Wesleyan (16-3, 6-1 CL) overcame its struggles from the perimeter with 45 points in the paint and 13 more from the charity stripe, while Taylor had just 27 points in the paint and sank 10 free throws.
Katrina Blackmon led all scorers with 18 points for IWU, while Becca Daniels countered in the post for Taylor with 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one block.
Taylor (7-12, 2-5 CL) will head north on Saturday to take on Goshen (4-15, 1-6 CL) in a 1:00 pm start, before returning to Odle Arena to take on Bethel and Grace on January 22 and 25.
