Trojans Fall to No. 6 Saint Xavier 76-57
UPLAND, Ind. – A well-balanced Saint Xavier offensive attack was too much for Taylor women's basketball to contain on Saturday, as the No. 6 Cougars came away from Odle Arena with a decisive victory.
The Cougars had five players in double-figure scoring as Saint Xavier was able to break open a large lead in the second half, with the largest lead being 25 with just over three minutes to play in the contest.
Taylor opened the game well in the opening stanza and shot the ball efficiently against the Saint Xavier defense, hitting 11-of-23 attempts for a 47.8 percent clip. The Cougars however went into the break clinging on to a four-point lead.
Saint Xavier pulled away in the second half by forcing turnovers and getting out on the fast-break. Taylor committed 21 turnovers in all for the contest, and the Cougars took advantage by scoring 27 points off Trojan turnovers. The Cougars also exhibited strong interior play and went on to outscore the Trojans 34 to 22 in the paint.
The Cougars were led by 16 points from Morgan Stuut and a quality performance from center Caitlin McMahon, who had 15 points to go along with thirteen rebounds. Mikayla Leyden also contributed 11 points and eight rebounds to the Saint Xavier cause.
Taylor freshman Cassidy Wyse was the team's high-scorer with 14, connecting on 6-of-10 shots from the field. Wyse also grabbed seven rebounds and added four assists. Junior Emma Brattain played well and was also able to reach double-digit scoring with 11 points, while Jackie Osenbaugh came off the bench and had a solid outing with 11 points and six rebounds.
Taylor (3-3) will be back in action this upcoming Tuesday inside of Odle Arena, as the Crossroads League schedule gets underway with a matchup against Grace. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
