Trojans Suffer Setback at Marian
INDIANAPOLIS – Taylor women's basketball lost its second consecutive road game to a Top-25 opponent, as the No. 17 Marian Knights prevailed 85-51 over the Trojans in Saturday's Crossroads League contest.
The 34 point Taylor defeat was the largest under second-year head coach Kelly Packard.
"Marian has the most talented offensive unit I have seen at my time at Taylor," said Packard. "Their ball movement, individual talent, and overall confidence make it a tough defensive matchup for us at this point."
Marian's efficiency did its damage, as the Knights were able to shoot 51.6 percent from the floor and 12-of-28 from beyond the three-point line. Marian was also able to force the Trojans into 21 turnovers and made the most of its ensuing possession, as the Knights poured in 32 points following Taylor turnovers.
Taylor shot only 38.3 percent from the floor and missed all eight of its attempts from deep. The Trojans were however able to get to the free-throw line often, shooting 15-of-21 from the charity stripe.
Four Marian players were able to reach double-figure scoring, led by Lakan Hasser Smith's game-high 21 points. Kaylee Walters had 13 points and six rebounds, Claire Holba added 10 points, and Joana Soeiro contributed 10 points and seven assists.
Jackie Osenbaugh had 11 points and six rebounds to pace the Trojans and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. Megan Richardson had nine points and six rebounds before fouling out, and Cassidy Wyse nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Taylor (4-6, 1-2 CL) will next return to its home court for a game against Wilberforce on Saturday, December 13. Taylor defeated Wilberforce 66-40 in the previous meeting between the two sides on November 18. Tip is set for 1:00 pm.
