Indiana Tech Claims 73-64 Win Over Trojans
UPLAND, Ind. – Having won 14 of the last 17 meetings against Indiana Tech, the Taylor women's basketball team fell to the Warriors, 73-64, Friday night inside Odle Arena.
Neither team was able to gain an advantage after the first quarter of play. Taylor was able to jump out to an early 7-0 start less than three minutes into the game behind baskets from seniors Monica Compton and Taylor Degenkolb, and a three-pointer by freshman Kendall Bradbury, but Indiana Tech was able to get its offense rolling and tie things up at 15-15 by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, TU again used a quick start to gain an early lead. Sophomore Josie Cobb hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Taylor a 21-15 advantage, but Indiana Tech went on a 6-0 run to tie things up at 21-21. Both teams managed to hit four shots in the second quarter, but Indiana Tech used free-throws to its advantage, knocking down eight-of-nine from the charity stripe to take a 32-27 lead into the half.
Coming out of the half, Taylor again used early scoring to regain the lead. The Trojans received scoring from five different players over the first five minutes of the quarter to take a 41-40 lead thanks to a 14-8 run. The Warriors were able to rebound from the run and even things up at 48-48 at the end of third quarter.
The fourth quarter turned out to be all Indiana Tech. The Warriors took the lead early in the quarter and never trailed again. Tech was able to extend its fourth-quarter lead to as many as 11, but Taylor found ways to cut the lead back to single digits. The Trojans were able to narrow the lead to just seven with 31 seconds left, but a pair of free throws by Indiana Tech moved the lead back to nine at 73-64. That score proved to be the final after the game was called with 19 seconds on the clock to allow for a fan to receive medical attention.
Free-throw shooting turned out to be the key factor in the game, as the Warriors connected on 23-of-27 from the line. Taylor, on the other hand, shot only 64 percent from the line, finishing 14-of-22.
Sophomore Cassidy Wyse led the Trojans' offense, finishing with a team-high 14 points on four-of-nine shooting, while also grabbing five rebounds. Degenkolb again reached double-figure scoring, as the forward scored 12 points and had seven rebounds. Cobb and Bradbury each chipped in 10 points, while Bradbury's 10 rebounds agave her a double-double.
Taylor will be back in action on Tuesday when the team wraps up its three-game homestand against Cincinnati Christian in a 7:00 p.m. start inside Odle Arena.
