Bethel Uses Three-Point Shooting to Get Past Trojans
UPLAND, Ind. – Despite having a hot hand at the free throw line Saturday afternoon, the Taylor women's basketball team was held to just 34 percent shooting from the floor, falling to Bethel College, 71-62. The Trojans dropped to 13-11 on the season and 4-8 in Crossroads League play.
After Bethel led by just four after the first quarter, the Pilots used the three-point arc in the second period to build their lead. The visitors from Mishawaka, Indiana knocked down four three-point on their first four scoring possessions to push their lead to 31-20.
Taylor responded with an 8-0 run, with all eight points coming from freshman Kendall Bradbury and senior Taylor Degenkolb, to narrow Bethel's lead to three with 1:25 left in the first half. Bethel ended the Trojan run with a free throw and went on to hold a halftime lead of 35-30.
After drilling a three-pointer to start the game for Taylor, senior Emma Brattain opened up the second half for TU with three-pointer to cut the Bethel lead to two. Despite shooting 53 percent and scoring 20 points in the third quarter, Taylor still found themselves down five heading into the final quarter.
The Trojans kept the game within striking distance through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter after Bradbury scored Taylor's first seven points in the fourth to trail Bethel 62-57. The Pilots, however, used a 7-0 run to extend themselves to a 12-point lead.
Taylor had its chances to make a run over the final four minutes of the game, but shot just one-of-eight during the final stretch of the game.
Bradbury led the Trojans with 25 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Brattain followed up her 26-point performance on Wednesday with 16 points today, while Degenkolb also finished in double-figures, netting 10.
Taylor will be back in action on Wednesday when the Trojans travel to Michigan to take on Spring Arbor at 7:00 pm. TU's next home game will be next Saturday, February 6 when the Purple and Gold host Mount Vernon Nazarene at 1:00 pm.
