UPLAND, Ind. – TU senior Monica Compton poured in a season-high 16 points on Senior Day to lift the Trojans to a 72-49 victory over Grace on Saturday.
With the win, Taylor secured the No. 5 seed in the Crossroads League Tournament, lining up a rematch at fourth-seeded Grace on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the tournament quarterfinals. The Trojans lost, 51-42, at Grace on January 21.
Both teams started the day slow on offense, as the two teams combined for 22 points on eight-of-29 shooting from the field over the first 10 minutes of action. TU held a 13-nine lead after the first period.
The second quarter was a different story for the Trojans, however, as the hosts rattled off ten unanswered points to begin the stanza, taking a 23-to-nine lead at the 7:22 mark. Grace closed the gap to 11, 32-21, with 96 seconds to go in the half, but a pair of TU buckets made it 36-21 in favor of the Purple and Gold at halftime.
Taylor shot a blistering 10-of-15 (67 percent) from the floor in the second quarter to build up the 15-point advantage.
The Trojans' offensive barrage continued in the third quarter, as Compton and Cassidy Wyse each drained two jumpers for an eight-to-zero burst to begin the second half, quickly inflating the TU lead to 23 points, 44-21, with 7:47 left in the third period. The 44 points in 22:13 of game action was more than the Trojans scored in the entire first contest at Grace on January 21 (42). Taylor backed up its second-quarter hot shooting with another sizzling shooting exhibition in the third period, going nine-of-13 (69 percent) over the 10-minute span.
The Lancers never cut the deficit under 20 the rest of the game, and TU cruised to the 72-49 win.
In addition to Compton's season-best output on seven-of-11 shooting, Wyse led Taylor with 18 points on eight-of-12 shooting from the floor. Aubrey Wright posted an all-around stat line of eight points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Kendall Bradbury added 15 points, seven rebounds, three dimes and two steals for the victors.
TU (13-17, 8-10 CL) will take on the Lancers (14-16, 9-9 CL) on the road in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
