INDIANAPOLIS – Alex Berends was named the Crossroads League Female Runner of the Week on Monday, after winning the individual title in dominant fashion in the first race of the season.
Berends picked up where she left off in 2014, lapping the field of 109 competitors at the Indiana Wesleyan Invite for her fifth first-place finish in six regular season collegiate races. The Hudsonville, Michigan native owns a personal record of 1,155-2 during six career regular season outings.
The 2014 NAIA All-American and 2014-2015 Taylor and Crossroads League Female Athlete of the Year crossed the line 42.5 seconds ahead of the next closest individual, setting a personal-best and course-record time of 17:50.6. The mark was just one second shy of breaking TU's all-time record.
The effort from Berends helped the ninth-ranked Trojans secure a team victory at the meet as well, while turning in the second-fastest team time in program history.
The honor is the sixth for Berends in her short career with the Trojans, as the sophomore has claimed the honor after each of her six regular season races over the past two years.
Berends and the Trojans will be back on the course on Friday, September 18, when they compete at the Indiana Intercollegiate in Terre Haute, Indiana. Friday's action is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
