Trojans Punctuate Regular Season with Win
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Taylor men's golf team capped off the regular season in style on Monday as the Trojans claimed the weather-shortened Ackerman-Allen Shootout.
The tournament at Purdue University's Ackerman-Allen Golf Course was originally scheduled for two rounds all to be played on Monday but snow and frigid temperatures forced the event to be shortened to one round.
The 16th-ranked Trojans were unfazed as TU posted an impressive team score of 2-over par 290 en route to the Trojans sixth team title of the season.
All-American Javan Johnson led the way for Taylor, carding a two-under par round of 70 to finish tied for second, one shot behind Marian's Jay Williams.
Junior Erik Fahlen carded a birdie on his final hole of the day, the par-5 second, to post a round of even par 72 while junior Noah Ross also birdied his final hole, the par-4 18th, to post 73. The Trojans also counted a 75 from junior Drew Pickering while sophomore Adam Kasitz carded an 81 to round of the scoring for the Taylor squad.
TU edged Crossroads League foe Indiana Wesleyan by five shots for the team title.
The Taylor reserve squad also posted an impressive round, tallying a team score of 303 to finish in third place in the team standings, ahead of Crossroads League foes Marian (304), Bethel (318), and Huntington (319).
Senior Jason Iler provided one of the highlights of the day, rolling in an eagle putt on his final hole of the day, the par-5 16th to post a round of 75. Sophomore Austin Davis also added a 75 while fellow sophomore Lance VanErmen tallied a 76 that also included an eagle on the par-5 16th hole. Junior Payne Moses added a 77 while freshman Tommy McWatters carded a 78 and senior Sam Yeager posted an 87.
Taylor will now turn its focus to the upcoming Crossroads League Championship where the Trojans will seek a sixth consecutive Crossroads League title. The 2022 Crossroads League Championship will be played at Chariot Run Golf Course in Laconia, Indiana on April 25-26.
