Taylor Upends Oakland City, 3-0, in Home Opener
UPLAND, Ind. – For the second straight outing, the Taylor University men's soccer team scored three second-half goals and cruised past Oakland City in the home opener at Turner Stadium Wednesday night.
With the win, TU (2-0-0) opens the season with back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2021 campaign.
Freshman Noel Calix connected on his third goal in two outings, while Jakob Karlson and Tadé Adeyemi each scored their first career goal.
After the scoreless opening stanza, Calix finished a quick attack by the Trojans in the 54th minute.
Jeremy Rivera started the scoring play after connecting with Adeyemi on the counter, who then slotted a through-ball to Calix on the run. The freshman didn't need to do much after the great pass and finished with a strong shot that caromed off the keeper and into the net.
Less than 10 minutes later, Karlson cleaned up a free ball which quickly made it 2-0 Trojans. The scoring opportunity came after a corner delivered by Rivera.
Then, only four minutes of game time passed before the Trojans added the final strike.
With a great transition-counter play engineered by Levi Kelly, the OCU keeper attempted to redirect the through-ball pass by coming 20 yards downfield but was unsuccessful as Calix and Adeyemi barreled down on him.
It was Adeyemi who benefitted from the misfire, spinning with the ball away from the keeper, and launching a long-range shot from nearly 40 yards out to convert the empty-net opportunity.
TU held the slight edge in shots, 6-5, with three in each period.
The Trojans surrendered only two shots on frame as starting keeper Connor Shaw logged the clean sheet with a pair of saves.
The Trojans return to action Saturday against #RV Madonna with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. at Turner Stadium.
