Trojans Earn 1-1 Draw against No. 7 Bethel
UPLAND, Ind. – For the third straight outing, Tadé Adeyemi scored a goal as the Taylor University men's soccer team overcame a late deficit to level with seventh-ranked Bethel 1-1 in Wednesday's Crossroads League opener at Turner Stadium.
TU (6-2-1, 0-0-1 CL) found the equalizer with nearly 15 minutes left in regulation when the team's leading goal scorer Adeyemi found the back of the net. The strike came off of a Caleb Van Dop header, which was a result from Justin Devlin's free kick from distance. Adeyemi beat the diving Bethel goalkeeper to the loose grounder and flicked on his fifth goal of the season.
After a scoreless first half, the visiting Bethel (6-1-2, 0-0-1 CL) squad scored early in the second period to claim the 1-0 lead. Julian Vargas Talamantes finished on a left-footed bender in the 53rd minute, marking his team-leading fifth goal for the Pilots.
Right before the Bethel goal, TU goalkeeper Connor Shaw recorded a spectacular save by making a leaping two-handed snag above an attacker. Shaw's efforts were solid all night, finishing with three saves between the posts for the Purple & Gray.
Knowing opportunities would be tough to come by against a strong Bethel side, the Trojans remained poised and organized to take advantage of the successful set piece in the 74th minute.
Bethel finished with the edge in shots 19-5, but only put four attempts on frame compared to two on the TU side. The Trojans did not attempt a corner kick for the first time this season.
With the result, the Trojans snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Pilots.
TU will return to action on Saturday evening when it travels to No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan (5-2-2, 0-0-1 CL). The Wildcats played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday at No. 24 Spring Arbor.
