Trojans Show Grit in Four-Set Loss to RV Marian
INDIANAPOLIS – A high-intensity match got away from the Trojans, dropping the match 3-1 despite holding a lead in each of the four sets on Friday night.
Gracie Conway led the Trojan attack with 14 kills on 43 swings for a .209 attacking percentage. Grace Ieremia continued her strong play with nine kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Ieremia added six blocks, including one of the solo variety, for 12.5 points in the match.
The Trojans (11-10, 2-7 CL) were ready off the bus and grabbed an 11-6 lead in the opening set. Marian chipped away at the lead, but TU continued to hold the advantage at 15-14. The wheels fell off thereafter as the Knights went on a 10-0 run to secure a commanding 24-15 lead. Marian finished it off two points later for a one-set advantage.
Taylor turned the tables in the second set to tie the match at one apiece. With the score tied at nine, Tayor used a 3-0 run to grab the moment and led 16-12 before Marian was forced to use a timeout. The timeout did not stop the Trojan momentum as the teams traded points before another 3-0 run gave TU a 21-14 lead. The Knights muster two straight points until Taylor scored the final four points to close out the set 25-16.
The third set was vital, with the match deadlocked at one apiece. Marian built an early advantage but was never ahead by more than four points. Taylor fought back with grit, slowly getting closer until taking its first lead of the set at 20-19. It was back and forth until a tie at 23 with two points the difference in who would be one set away from victory. Unfortunately, the Knights scored two straight points to take the set and momentum into the fourth.
Marian (13-6, 7-2 CL) dominated to begin the fourth, taking a 21-9 lead. The Trojans continued to show their grit and never give up attitude by scoring eight straight points and 10 of 11 to close the gap to a pair. TU could not quite close out the incredible comeback, dropping the set 25-21 after an outstanding performance on the road.
Lindsay Springer delivered a double-double with 34 assists and 16 digs while adding three blocks and two kills in a terrific all-around match.
Taylor will look for a quick bounce-back on Saturday, September 30, when RV Bethel (17-3, 6-3 CL) comes into Odle Arena for a Crossroads League match set to begin at 3:00 pm.
