Trojans Drop 6-1 Decision to Goshen
UPLAND, Ind. – Tyler Lane earned a dramatic three-set victory at No. 1 singles to provide Taylor men's tennis its lone point in a 6-1 loss to receiving-votes Goshen on Saturday at the Taylor Tennis Complex.
Lane dropped the opening set 2-6 against Goshen's Iago Ciucio but settled in during the second. He held his serve under pressure and forced a tiebreak, where he edged Ciucio 7-6 (7) to send the match to a decisive super tiebreak. Lane took full control, rolling to a 10-1 win to cap the longest match of the afternoon at one hour and 43 minutes. The comeback marked the Trojans' first singles win against a receiving-votes opponent this season.
TU competed closest in doubles at No. 3, where Ian Helfert and Andrew Roth pushed Goshen's Filippo Gallo and Paulo Santiago to 6-4 in the tightest doubles set of the day. Joseph Harper and Matthew Williams also put together a solid showing at No. 2 doubles, falling 6-3 before Goshen clinched the doubles point.
Helfert had the next-best singles showing behind Lane, winning three games in the second set at No. 4 against Gallo. Josh Dawson competed at No. 5, and Josh Clegg and Graham Beukelman rounded out the singles lineup at No. 6 and No. 3, respectively.
The Trojans have now faced a challenging stretch of Crossroads League competition in recent weeks. TU returns to the court Tuesday when it travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene for a Crossroads League match, before heading to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday. The Trojans return to the friendly confines of the Taylor Tennis Complex when they host Spring Arbor on April 7.
