Seventh-Ranked Trojans Hold On for Victory
MARION, Ind. – The seventh-ranked Taylor women's golf team captured its first tournament title of the 2018-2019 season on Saturday as the Trojans won the IWU Invitational.
Juniors Maddie Thomas and Annie Stimmel led the way for TU during Saturday's final round as both players carded rounds of 5-over par 77. Sophomore Nicole Jung rolled in a birdie on her final hole, the par-5 18th, to close with a 79 while senior Elizabeth Jackson added an 81 and sophomore Taylor French tallied an 83.
The Trojans entered Saturday's final round with a one-shot advantage over Crossroads League foes (RV) Indiana Wesleyan and (RV) Saint Francis. TU managed to hold off the Cougars and Wildcats with a final round team score of 314. The Trojans finished the tournament with a two-day total of 628 (314-314) to edge Saint Francis (315-315=630) and Indiana Wesleyan (315-316=631) and take the tournament title in the field of 13 teams.
Thomas was the top individual finisher for TU finishing in sixth place at 154 (77-77). Jung picked up a top-10 finish, collecting ninth place at 156 (77-79) while Stimmel finished tied for 12th (83-77) and Jackson finished tied for 14th (80-81).
Senior Raquel Helton posted a strong final round score of 77 to lead the TU "B" squad. Sophomore Rachel Coers added an 83 while freshman Annie Eisenbarth tallied an 89, junior Lauren Murphy added a 90, junior Alexis Harris totaled a 92 and sophomore Mariah Williams finished with a 99.
The Trojans will return to action on Sept. 21-22 when TU travels to South Bend, Indiana for the Battle at Blackthorn at Blackthorn Golf Club.
