Trojans Fall to Maple Leafs in CL Play
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor women's tennis fell 7-0 to receiving-votes Goshen in a Crossroads League match Saturday afternoon at the Taylor Tennis Complex.
The Trojans (4-9, 0-3 CL) found their best moments at the top of the lineup. Maddy Fuqua turned in the day's most competitive individual performance at No. 1 singles, winning five games across two sets against Uliana Dotsenko before falling 6-3, 6-2.
Taylor showed fight in doubles as well. Fuqua and Anna Stone held their ground at No. 1 doubles before falling 6-2, and Ellie Schaufelberger and Delaney Dahl matched that score at No. 2. Both pairings found a rhythm early and stayed competitive before Goshen pulled away. Evy Danemayer and Gracie Frazier rounded out doubles play at the No. 3 flight.
In singles, Stone won three games at No. 5 and Danemayer picked up a game in each set at No. 4, competing point-for-point in stretches. Schaufelberger battled at No. 3, winning a game in the opening set before Goshen's Maria Clara Fonte closed out the match in straight sets.
Saturday's result continues a challenging stretch for the Trojans, who have faced three consecutive opponents receiving votes or ranked in the NAIA poll — No. 23 Bethel, receiving-votes Grace and now receiving-votes Goshen to begin conference play. TU will look to carry the competitive moments from that gauntlet into the stretch run of the conference schedule ahead.
TU returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene for a 2 p.m. Crossroads League match, and Saturday at No. 21 Indiana Wesleyan. The Trojans return to host Spring Arbor on April 7.
