Trojans Fall to 12th-Ranked Marian
MUNCIE, Ind. – For the second consecutive match, weather dictated the Taylor University women's tennis team's plans. Relocated from Upland to Muncie First Serve due to rain, the Trojans fell 4-0 to 12th-ranked Marian on Saturday morning in a Crossroads League contest played until the clinching point.
The Knights (13-6, 9-0 CL), who feature three ITA-ranked singles players in their lineup, claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two flights before taking three singles matches to reach the deciding fourth team point. Taylor dropped to 6-13 on the season and 2-7 in league play.
Marian wasted little time in doubles. Ana Lopez Torres (ITA No. 19) and Yasmin Imamniyazova (No. 14) blanked Maddy Fuqua and Anna Stone 6-0 at No. 1, and Jimena Rivera Flores and Michelle Irigoyen (No. 21) followed with a 6-0 decision over Ellie Schaufelberger and Delaney Dahl at No. 2 to lock up the doubles point. The No. 3 match between Evy Danemayer and Gracie Frazier and Marian's Ana Barbosa and Emma Chrome did not start.
Imamniyazova kept rolling in singles, blanking Fuqua 6-0, 6-0 at the top flight. Barbosa added a 6-1, 6-1 win over Schaufelberger at No. 3, and Chrome claimed the clinching point with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Stone at No. 5.
Two matches reached the second set before play was halted. Rivera Flores led Danemayer 6-1, 5-0 at No. 4, while Frazier trailed Maggie Bertram 1-6 but had pulled ahead 2-1 in the second set at No. 6. The No. 2 match between Jillian Darby and Irigoyen was not played.
The two teams meet again Monday in the Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinals, scheduled for 1 p.m. at USTA Midwest in Indianapolis. The match will be closed to spectators.
