Trojans Sweep MVNU for First Crossroads League Win
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – In its first season back on the court since 2019-20, the Taylor women's tennis program picked up a milestone Tuesday.
The Trojans earned their first Crossroads League victory of the season with a dominant 7-0 sweep of Mount Vernon Nazarene, claiming all three doubles matches and all five contested singles flights in a statement road performance.
Taylor (5-9, 1-3 CL) made the most of its first CL road trip of the season, controlling the match from the opening doubles point through the final singles flight.
The Trojans secured the doubles point with wins at all three flights. Maddy Fuqua and Anna Stone set the tone at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3 victory, while Ellie Schaufelberger and Delaney Dahl matched that scoreline at No. 2. Evy Danemayer and Gracie Frazier completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Singles play was even more decisive. Fuqua was dominant at the top of the lineup, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Annie Mahek at No. 1 singles. The victory gave Fuqua a team-leading eight singles wins on the year, pushing her record back to .500. Jillian Darby posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2, and Schaufelberger mirrored Fuqua's line with a 6-0, 6-1 result at No. 3. Stone cruised 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 for her sixth singles win of the season.
The most competitive match of the afternoon came at No. 4 singles, where Danemayer needed to fight through a tighter second set before closing out Maria Cottenden 6-3, 7-5. Taylor also received a win by default at No. 6.
The Trojans now turn their attention to a difficult road test Saturday at No. 21 Indiana Wesleyan. First serve is set for 3 p.m. in Marion.
