Women's Tennis Picks Up Third-Consecutive Win
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – In a tough road contest, the TU women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory over the Cougars of MVNU. Taylor (3-2, 2-1) has now won three straight matches to lift their season record back above .500.
Even though the score landed at a lopsided 6-1 tally, the match was anything but a blowout. TU battled and prevailed against the Cougars for their second league victory and third win overall.
In doubles, TU picked up the team point with wins on courts two and three. Both duos of Lauryn Riegsecker and Molly Pile and Kiersten Martin and Lydia Browning were able to secure 6-1 wins. TU's top tandem fell in a close contest that finished in favor of the Cougars 6-4.
The Trojans were able to secure the win with the first three singles matches. Landing two-set match victories were Katelyn Gray, Riegsecker and Pile. In No. 2 and No. 4 singles, TU's Julianna Hotmire and Martin both navigated their way through longer three-set contests on the way to TU's 6-1 win.
"The ladies had to battle today," said Coach Jon Wegener. "Mount Vernon came out ready to play, but our girls held tough in several positions. We are looking forward to a couple tough matches this weekend."
The stage is set for a double dose of TU tennis on Saturday. The Trojans will open the day battling NAIA No. 25 Marian at 10:00 a.m. and will follow with a second contest against Wittenberg University at 3:00 p.m.
